Collect terms without changing signs accidentally
When variables appear on both sides, subtract the same variable term from each side. Then add or subtract constants to leave a single variable term. Recording each operation is safer than moving symbols mentally.
A linear equation has no powers above one after simplification. The solver accepts expanded x terms and decimal coefficients; expand any brackets before typing them.
Recognize the zero-coefficient cases
If collecting terms produces 0x = 0, the equation is an identity and every real x works. If it produces 0x = 5, no x can make it true. Only a nonzero coefficient can be divided out to produce one solution.
Always check the original sides by substitution. Decimal coefficients can be legitimate, so retain the entered precision rather than rounding each line of work.
Use parentheses when checking negative roots
If the solution is negative, substitute it as a grouped value. For x = −3, the term −2x becomes −2 × (−3) = 6. Omitting the grouping in handwritten work can make a valid negative solution appear to fail its check. Evaluate each side independently and compare their final values.
LET’S WORK IT THROUGH
Solve 8x − 5 = 3x + 20.
- Subtract 3x: 5x − 5 = 20.
- Add 5: 5x = 25.
- Divide by 5.
THE ANSWERx = 5.
YOUR TURN
A small check for understanding.
What does 2x + 4 = 2x + 4 imply?
Reveal the answer
Infinitely many real solutions: both sides are identical.
