ALGEBRA / THE HOW & THE WHY

Find x by undoing one operation at a time

Work backward through a linear equation, keep each line readable, and verify your answer by substitution.

THE IDEA AT A GLANCEax + b = c → x = (c − b)/a
01

Identify the outside operation first

In 6x + 4, multiplication builds 6x before 4 is added. To isolate x, undo the addition first, then the multiplication. Reversing the order of construction makes the steps easier to follow.

Keep an equals sign on every line. An equation is a statement about two sides, not a chain of unrelated arithmetic operations.

02

Remove brackets before collecting terms

A factor outside a bracket multiplies every term inside. For example, 3(x − 2) becomes 3x − 6. Distributing only to x would change the problem.

If the equation contains denominators, multiply every term on both sides by a common nonzero denominator. Record any restrictions involving variable denominators before simplifying.

03

Make the check part of the solution

Once x is isolated, substitute it back into the original expression, including its brackets. A correct answer balances both sides, not just one simplified term.

The calculator handles expanded linear equations. It does not infer hidden multiplication or accept every textbook notation. Use the worked method here to rewrite an input into the supported form.

LET’S WORK IT THROUGH

Solve 3(x − 2) + 4 = 19.

  1. Expand: 3x − 6 + 4 = 19, so 3x − 2 = 19.
  2. Add 2: 3x = 21.
  3. Divide by 3: x = 7.

THE ANSWERx = 7; 3(7 − 2) + 4 = 19 checks the answer.

YOUR TURN

A small check for understanding.

Solve 7x + 5 = 40.

Reveal the answer

x = 5. Subtract 5, then divide the remaining 35 by 7.

Now try your own numbers.

The solve for x includes input guidance and the limits of its supported calculations. Use it alongside the method above.
