PERCENTAGES / ONE IDEA, WORKED THROUGH

Turn a discount percent into a price calculation

Find the decimal saving rate and the separate multiplier for the amount remaining.

THE IDEA AT A GLANCE18% = 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
01

Write the hidden denominator

The percent sign means “out of one hundred.” Thus 18% is the same quantity as 18/100. Dividing gives 0.18. Removing only the sign would leave 18, a number one hundred times too large.

Because 18% is between 0% and 100%, its decimal 0.18 lies between zero and one. Use that interval to check the placement of the decimal point.

02

Use the value in the right kind of field

A plain arithmetic expression needs the decimal multiplier: 150 × 0.18 = 27. The Percent of a number tool instead labels its field Percentage (%), so enter 18; it performs division by 100 for you.

Converting the rate before typing it into a percentage field applies the conversion twice. When a result seems one hundred times too small, check the field label before changing the formula.

03

Separate a share from a changed total

For an 18% discount on 150, the saving is 27. The amount remaining is 150 − 27 = 123, also obtained by 150 × (1 − 0.18). The discount rate and the remaining-price factor answer different questions.

Check the reverse conversion: 0.18 × 100 = 18. This returns the numerical percentage, after which the % symbol is restored. Keep any rounding separate from this exact place-value conversion.

LET’S WORK IT THROUGH

Find 18% of 150.

  1. Convert the rate: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18.
  2. Multiply: 150 × 0.18 = 27.
  3. Check the scale against a fraction of 150.

THE ANSWERThe requested share is 27.
