PERCENTAGES / ONE IDEA, WORKED THROUGH

One hundred percent is one whole

Understand why 100% becomes 1, and how that helps with growth factors.

THE IDEA AT A GLANCE100% = 100 ÷ 100 = 1
01

Write the hidden denominator

The percent sign means “out of one hundred.” Thus 100% is the same quantity as 100/100. Dividing gives 1. Removing only the sign would leave 100, a number one hundred times too large.

One whole corresponds to the multiplier 1. Applying 100% leaves a quantity unchanged. A 100% increase is different: it adds another whole and uses multiplier 2.

02

Use the value in the right kind of field

A plain arithmetic expression needs the decimal multiplier: 64 × 1 = 64. The Percent of a number tool instead labels its field Percentage (%), so enter 100; it performs division by 100 for you.

Converting the rate before typing it into a percentage field applies the conversion twice. When a result seems one hundred times too small, check the field label before changing the formula.

03

Separate a share from a changed total

The share 64 is 100% of 64. If the question asks for an increase, add the share to the original to obtain 128. If it asks only for the part, stop at 64.

Check the reverse conversion: 1 × 100 = 100. This returns the numerical percentage, after which the % symbol is restored. Keep any rounding separate from this exact place-value conversion.

LET’S WORK IT THROUGH

Find 100% of 64.

  1. Convert the rate: 100 ÷ 100 = 1.
  2. Multiply: 64 × 1 = 64.
  3. Check the scale against the whole of 64.

THE ANSWERThe requested share is 64.

YOUR TURN

A small check for understanding.

Convert the decimal 1 back into a percentage.

Reveal the answer

100%. Multiply by 100 and restore the percent sign.

Now try your own numbers.
