PERCENTAGES / ONE IDEA, WORKED THROUGH

Convert a percent to a decimal with a size check

Connect the fraction over 100 to the decimal you enter in a formula.

THE IDEA AT A GLANCE35% = 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
01

Write the hidden denominator

The percent sign means “out of one hundred.” Thus 35% is the same quantity as 35/100. Dividing gives 0.35. Removing only the sign would leave 35, a number one hundred times too large.

Because 35% is between 0% and 100%, its decimal 0.35 lies between zero and one. Use that interval to check the placement of the decimal point.

02

Use the value in the right kind of field

A plain arithmetic expression needs the decimal multiplier: 160 × 0.35 = 56. The Percent of a number tool instead labels its field Percentage (%), so enter 35; it performs division by 100 for you.

Converting the rate before typing it into a percentage field applies the conversion twice. When a result seems one hundred times too small, check the field label before changing the formula.

03

Separate a share from a changed total

The share 56 is 35% of 160. If the question asks for an increase, add the share to the original to obtain 216. If it asks only for the part, stop at 56.

Check the reverse conversion: 0.35 × 100 = 35. This returns the numerical percentage, after which the % symbol is restored. Keep any rounding separate from this exact place-value conversion.

LET’S WORK IT THROUGH

Find 35% of 160.

  1. Convert the rate: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35.
  2. Multiply: 160 × 0.35 = 56.
  3. Check the scale against a fraction of 160.

THE ANSWERThe requested share is 56.
