Divide the numerator by the denominator
The fraction 3/4 describes 3 of 4 equal parts. Its decimal comes from the division 3 ÷ 4. The exact result is 0.75.
Both numbers are positive and the numerator is smaller, so the decimal must fall between zero and one. This quick size check catches accidentally reversing the division. The fraction is already in simplest form.
Express the same quantity per hundred
Multiply the quotient by 100: (3 ÷ 4) × 100 = 75%. This changes the notation, not the amount. For a whole of 400 units, this fraction represents 300 units.
The percentage is greater than 50%, consistent with comparing 3/4 to one half. To convert the percent back to a decimal, divide its numerical value by 100.
Why the decimal stops
After simplification, the denominator 4 has no prime factors other than 2 or 5. It can therefore be scaled into a power of ten, producing a terminating decimal.
The value 0.75 is exact. Extra trailing zeros would not change it. If you choose a shorter rounded display, state that it is approximate.
LET’S WORK IT THROUGH
Find 3/4 of a collection containing 32 items.
- Split 32 into 4 equal groups: each contains 8 items.
- Take 3 groups: 3 × 8 = 24.
- Check using the fraction: 32 × 3/4 = 24.
THE ANSWER24 items. A fraction, decimal and percentage describe the same share.
